Meet the lady behind the sewing machine

Hey there! My name is Allison Angelique Farnsworth, and I’m the owner and operator of Angelique Tutus.

Just how did I get into building tutus? Well, back when I was a student at Ballet Memphis School, we joked you had to earn your tutu. It was a big deal when you were considered strong enough for a role that required a tutu.

After I graduated from high school, I earned a B.A. in Dance from Brigham Young University, and then an M.F.A. in Ballet Teaching and Choreography from the University of Utah, and also danced with Burklyn Ballet Theatre. During those years of dancing and choreographing, I got really used to beautiful costumes. Then I started teaching at local studios and discovered that most dance schools relied on catalogue costumes instead of the professional costumes I knew and loved. I knew that studio budgets wouldn’t necessarily allow the purchase of classical tutus, and so I decided I would have to learn to make them myself. Luckily, the costume mistress at BYU happened to be holding a tutu workshop at the time, and so I attended and built my first tutu.

That was over 10 years ago, and since then, I have learned so much about costume construction and sewing and fitting techniques. I currently work as a Costumer at BYU, where I build and alter costumes from all genres, including ballet and ballroom, which has also increased my skills.

Now, with the running of Angelique Tutus, I get to meet so many dancers and help them “earn” their tutu. I love the magical moment when they enter my sewing studio and see their costume waiting for them. I am confident that you will be pleased with my work when you see the finished product. You can also be secure in the knowledge that I understand what is required of a costume, as I know how it feels to dance in a tutu. A well-fitted tutu helps a dancer feel confident, and that confidence shows on stage! Let’s work together, and create the costume of your dreams.

Back in my dancing days!
